Invertebrate is our sixth single. We like to think of it as a funky dark pop song.
The title and lyrics were inspired by the experience of being trolled by our first and only anonymous hater, who, amusingly, accidentally revealed his identity when he slipped up and used his real account sign-in while in the midst of a string of abusive comments, and confirmed what we'd suspected all along.
The music was initially inspired by Glenn teaching himself to play Wings' 1985 on piano, and then developed in a Scissor Sisters / Elton John direction for the chorus. The verses are more influenced by our love for Depeche Mode. Darkwave meets pop with the funk bass, funk rock drums and guitar that are always part of our sound.
So like a child with hands over his eyes saying “You can’t see me”.
Ever so telling how you reveal the truth but hide your identity.
I caught you sneaking off the battlefield in hooded disguise.
A yellow-bellied snake, you’re tarred in pure hate and white-feathered lies.
I know it’s you. I know it’s you.
I’m sure of it, I’m sure of it.
Come out and say it to my face,
Invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate.
Slinging your mud, you’re sniggering and smug and throwing molotovs of hate.
Clueless behaviour of the kind the more intelligent politely tolerate.
Nobody’s listening to what you have to say, not any more.
The world is switching off its eyes and ears to you, you’re such a bore.
I know it’s you. I know it’s you.
I’m sure of it, I’m sure of it.
Come out and say it to my face,
Invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate.
Where do you get off slandering my name?
Is this a personal obsession? It’s a sick and jealous game.
Are you hiding a grievance? You know it’s true. Well who’s really to blame?
I know it’s you. I know it’s you. I know it’s you.
I know it’s you. I know it’s you.
I’m sure of it, I’m sure of it.
Come out and say it to my face,
Invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate.
I know it’s you. I know it’s you.
I’m sure of it, I’m sure of it.
Come out and say it to my face,
Invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate, invertebrate.
